DeFi's Quiet Crisis: Fragmented Liquidity Models Fail
The cryptocurrency industry's focus on launching Ethereum layer-2 chains has led to a quiet crisis in decentralized finance (DeFi), according to Matthew Fisher, CEO of Katana. This crisis is forcing DeFi protocols to abandon fragmented liquidity models and adopt vertically integrated financial ecosystems.
Fisher stated that the next phase of DeFi will be dominated by hyper-specialized chains that own their own lending, trading, and derivatives infrastructure. He noted that many blockchains treated block space as a product rather than focusing on economic activity, leading to inefficiencies in the system.
The DeFi yield environment has also deteriorated, with borrowing demand weakening and repeated exploits forcing investors to reassess smart contract risk. Fisher acknowledged that on-chain 'risk-free' lending rates have fallen below U.S. Treasury bill yields, making it difficult for DeFi protocols to compete for liquidity.
