DeFi's Walled Gardens: A Shift Away from Community-First Ideals

The decentralized finance (DeFi) space has undergone significant changes in recent years. Initially, it promised open, permissionless, and decentralized protocols that would cut out middlemen and ensure efficiency for users.

However, core development teams across major ecosystems have quietly shifted away from these fundamentals. They have started to hoard yield, lock liquidity behind closed doors, and nearly abandoned the 'community-first' ideal they once sold.

Tokens have become 'non-dilutive shadow equities,' with projects like Hyperliquid capturing a significant portion of trading fees in internal funds. Aave, another prominent DeFi protocol, has started to funnel 100% of its product revenue into the DAO treasury.

This shift towards walled gardens has significant implications for the broader ecosystem. With liquidity trapped inside native vaults, open DEXs are struggling to maintain their orderbooks and attract organic volume.
