Megachurch pastor Adam Hamilton has made history by defeating Republican incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas’ Senate race, becoming the first Democrat elected to the position in the state in nearly a century. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday evening for Hamilton, who secured 51.9% of the vote with 91% of votes counted. Marshall trailed with 45.2% of the vote, marking a significant setback for the GOP as it aims to retain control of Congress.

The race, initially considered a likely Republican victory, tightened in the final weeks as Hamilton narrowed the gap. The Cook Political Report shifted its rating from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican” on September 23, and then to a “Toss Up” on October 6. Republicans responded by diverting resources, including $8.2 million in ad spending, to defend Marshall’s seat, a level of investment typically reserved for battleground states.

Marshall, a former OB-GYN and military officer, has been a strong ally of President Donald Trump, who endorsed him as one of his “favorite senators.” However, Trump’s declining approval ratings and economic challenges, such as the war in Iran driving up fuel prices and retaliatory tariffs hurting Kansas’ agricultural sector, may have contributed to Marshall’s loss. Agriculture is Kansas’ largest economic driver, contributing $62 billion and nearly 150,000 jobs.

In a final push, Trump rallied supporters in Salina on Sunday, urging them to “pretend I'm on the ballot.” Meanwhile, Hamilton positioned himself as a centrist, emphasizing his willingness to work across party lines. “I’m somebody who stands in the middle,” Hamilton said during the second debate. “I’m going to try to work for all Kansans, Republicans, independents and Democrats.”
