Democrats Block Crypto Regulation Amid Trump Investment Concerns
Senate Democrats blocked legislation to regulate cryptocurrency, stalling an industry-backed effort for uniform rules. The $2.3-trillion market has been pushing aggressively for a new regulatory framework. Some Democrats support regulation but want stronger ethics safeguards to prevent President Trump and his family from profiting from crypto investments while in office.
Trump agreed to some concessions on ethics, including restrictions on federal elected officials issuing digital assets like the presidential meme coins he launched before his second term. However, this was not enough for Democrats, who wanted a requirement for Trump or any future president to divest if holdings reach a certain value.
The legislation aimed to give crypto firms legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements. Republicans needed Democratic support to win the 60 votes necessary to move forward on the bill in the 53-47 Senate.
