Democrats Block Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Amid Ethics Concerns
Senate Democrats have blocked a bill aimed at creating a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, dealing a blow to the $2.3 trillion industry that has been pushing aggressively for uniform rules.
The legislation, which was championed by Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, would have placed new guardrails around digital assets and given crypto companies more legal certainty.
Lummis accused Democrats of being insincere in their efforts to protect consumers and preserve American leadership in the industry, saying they 'made new demands and moved the goal posts' whenever Republicans attempted to address their concerns.
President Donald Trump had agreed to some concessions on ethics, including restrictions on federal elected officials from issuing digital assets like his presidential meme coins. However, these concessions were not enough for Democrats, who sent a counteroffer late Monday to expand the ethics provision but were unable to strike a final deal.
