Democrats Reject CLARITY Act Despite Memecoin Provisions
U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) has shed light on the contentious CLARITY Act, which failed its procedural vote last month. Despite incorporating provisions addressing memecoins and network tokens at the request of Democrats, the bill was rejected by a majority of them. Lummis pointed out that as many as 126 substantive changes were made to the bill, making it a strong contender.
The senator attributed the bill's demise to partisan divisions, citing the role of President Donald Trump. The Democrats, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), argued that the bill primarily benefited Trump and would have exacerbated his 'unprecedented corruption.'
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) expressed concerns that the bill failed to address the 'fundamental conflict of interest' created by Trump's ventures, including the Official Trump (CRYPTO: TRUMP) memecoin. The senator noted that Trump's companies generated over $1.4 billion from crypto ventures, with over $520 million coming from World Liberty Financial token sales and over $635 million from memecoin royalties.
