Democrats split on corporate crackdown if they retake Congress
Democrats are preparing to investigate President Donald Trump’s business connections if they regain control of Congress, but internal disagreements are already emerging over how aggressively to target companies that engaged with the White House over the past two years.
Key figures like California Reps. Robert Garcia and Maxine Waters, who could lead influential committees, would have sweeping subpoena powers over firms linked to Trump and his family. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has already questioned major corporations about their support for Trump-affiliated causes.
However, some Democrats warn against overusing investigative powers, cautioning that doing so could risk retribution against corporate America. The debate highlights potential tensions over how to handle prominent companies, including tech giants like Meta and Amazon, as well as cryptocurrency leaders like Coinbase and Ripple, if Democrats regain power.
Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.) emphasized the need for restraint, stating, 'We don’t want to turn into a banana republic where you lose an election and it’s all about retribution.' He suggested distinguishing between companies that cooperated under pressure and those that actively profited from the administration’s policies.
