Deribit Unveils Starbase Matching Engine with 61x Latency Reduction
Deribit, the popular cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, has upgraded its matching engine to a new system called Starbase. This upgrade has significantly improved the exchange's latency, with median request-response latency dropping from 4.7 ms to 76 µs. This represents an improvement of approximately 61 times, making Deribit one of the fastest exchanges in the industry.
The new Starbase engine processes over 100,000 orders per second with sub-millisecond matching. It also enforces stricter FIFO ordering, ensuring that orders at the same price are filled in the order they reached the exchange. This change is part of Deribit's deeper integration with the Coinbase International Exchange, which aims to improve performance and scalability.
The upgrade was rolled out in early July 2026, following a testnet launch in April 2026. The new engine also provides equal access for co-located traders at LD4, and adds low-latency APIs using SBE over TCP and UDP multicast.
