Deutsche Bank Enters Crypto Custody Market with 2026 Launch
Deutsche Bank plans to launch institutional crypto custody services by the end of 2026, targeting corporate and institutional clients in Europe. The move will support a limited group of digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, EURC, and EURAU.
The bank has partnered with Taurus for infrastructure and is developing a custody service according to client demand, regulatory requirements, and its risk appetite. Initially, the focus will be on asset safekeeping and transfers, allowing clients to hold digital assets and transfer them to third parties while the bank manages the associated wallets and private keys.
Deutsche Bank's co-head of Corporate Bank, Gerald Podobnik, described digital assets as an extension of existing financial infrastructure rather than a replacement for traditional markets. The bank will use multiple layers of operational controls, including secure key generation, hardware-based protection, segregation of duties, multi-person approval procedures, separate warm and cold storage environments, and backup and recovery systems.
The planned launch follows regulatory changes that have helped create a clearer path for traditional financial institutions to enter the digital asset market. The Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework provides common rules for crypto-asset activities, giving banks and other institutions a clearer basis for developing related products. The U.S. has also eased some barriers to crypto custody by replacing SEC Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 with SAB 122.
