DEX Spot Volume Hits 24% of CEX Volume, Redefining Crypto Trading Landscape
The crypto market has witnessed a significant shift in trading volumes, with decentralized exchanges (DEXs) now accounting for 24% of centralized exchange (CEX) volume. This milestone was reached in July 2026, according to data compiled by The Block and DefiLlama.
This growth is not just a temporary rotation; it reflects a deliberate shift by traders and capital allocators towards non-custodial venues. Regulatory pressure has been a key catalyst for this change, with CEXs facing an escalating compliance burden in the US, Europe, and several Asian jurisdictions.
The threat of enforcement actions and uncertain legislation has made CEXs less predictable for sensitive trading strategies, leading users to seek refuge in DEXs. Additionally, modern DEX aggregators have improved on-chain execution, matching or beating CEX prices for spot pairs up to a few million dollars in notional.
The growth of on-chain asset classes has also contributed to the shift towards DEXs. Tokenized real-world assets have crossed $20 billion in total value locked, creating a new class of instruments that naturally gravitate toward DEX liquidity pools.
