Digital Ruble Sees Explosive Adoption with 87,000 Account Openings in Ten Days
The Bank of Russia's digital ruble has made significant strides since its nationwide rollout on September 1, attracting over 87,000 account openings in just ten days. This marks a rapid adoption rate, with approximately 8,700 new accounts opened per day.
According to Elvira Nabiullina, governor of the Bank of Russia, more than 50,000 transactions have been made using the digital ruble during this period.
The digital ruble is not a cryptocurrency but rather a central bank-issued digital currency that coexists with the Russian crypto market. It has a fixed value equivalent to one ruble and can be used for various transactions, including payments and transfers.
While some users are testing the service to see how it works, Nabiullina emphasizes that usage remains voluntary, and individuals do not automatically receive a digital ruble wallet.
