Dogecoin Genesis Block Reward Was 88 DOGE: Paulo Vidal's Tweet Sparks Interest
The Dogecoin (DOGE) price is currently in the red, down 0.15% in the last 24 hours to $0.699 and 0.42% weekly. Amidst this market quietness, Dogecoin Foundation developer Paulo Vidal tweeted about the significance of the number '88' in relation to DOGE.
Vidal shared a screenshot highlighting that the genesis block Coinbase reward for DOGE was exactly 88 $DOGE when the cryptocurrency launched on December 6, 2013. The genesis block used a randomized block reward system before transitioning to a fixed model in March 2014. For blocks 0-100,000, rewards were randomized between 1 $DOGE and 1,000,000 $DOGE.
The Dogecoin price has dropped below $0.07, down roughly 70% in the last year. On major exchanges like Binance and OKX, long positions significantly exceed shorts, creating a risk of forced liquidations if prices fall further. According to on-chain data, speculation has returned to October 2025 levels with futures positioning rebuilding to levels seen when DOGE traded at three times its current price.
