The Dogecoin team has submitted a proposal to upgrade the protocol to include native zero-knowledge proof verification capabilities. The OP_CHECKZKP proposal aims to transform Dogecoin from a basic payment system into a platform that can support DeFi and gaming applications.

According to the proposal, enabling zk-rollups will allow Dogecoin to verify thousands of off-chain transactions per second on-chain. This would enable the development of more complex use cases for Dogecoin, such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and gaming applications.

DogeOS is also developing an EVM-compatible zkVM that would allow Ethereum-based applications to run while settling to Dogecoin. The upgrade has been described by Tim Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, as essential for building ecosystem utility and interoperability.
