Dogecoin Surges Amid Broader Crypto Rally and Short Squeeze
The price of Dogecoin has surged 15% in recent days, but this move is not driven by any specific fundamental news about the asset. Instead, it's part of a broader leveraged crypto rally that has seen multiple assets experience significant gains.
A classic short squeeze across crypto is being cited as one of the main drivers behind Dogecoin's price increase, with over $1 billion in positions liquidated in 24 hours, including around 82% from short sellers. This forced short covering has contributed to the broad rally, which also includes Bitcoin breaking above $85,000 for the first time since January.
Bitcoin's breakout has been accompanied by record or near-record ETF inflows into US spot Bitcoin funds and significant inflows into spot Ethereum ETFs. This institutional flow often underpins sustained moves rather than a one-hour spike. Additionally, an 'Altcoin Cycle Signal' has flipped from Bitcoin season to altcoin season as BTC pushed past $87,000.
Within the context of this macro backdrop, Dogecoin's notional open interest has jumped about 10.1% in a single hour to roughly $350 million, indicating new leveraged money flowing specifically into DOGE. Technical analysts also note that DOGE broke out decisively above a previously marked descending channel support zone.
