Dogecoin Takes a Step Forward with DogeOS Testnet Launch
Dogecoin is taking a significant step towards becoming a more versatile cryptocurrency, with the launch of its application layer, DogeOS. The public testnet for DogeOS was opened on September 30, allowing developers to test and build applications on the Dogecoin network. The testnet is paid in $DOGE, the native coin of the Dogecoin network, and features a variety of teams already building on it, including a lending protocol, a perpetual exchange, a stablecoin, and a prediction market aggregator.
The DogeOS team is working to add a new layer of functionality to the Dogecoin network, making it more than just a digital currency. This is similar to what Ethereum has achieved, with its own set of applications and smart contracts. The team behind the MyDoge wallet founded the project, and it runs as a separate layer rather than changing the coin itself.
Fees on the testnet are paid in $DOGE, and the faucet gives out 42.069 test $DOGE per day. The launch of DogeOS marks a shift in what Dogecoin is, according to founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson, who said it's the beginning of Dogecoin's evolution from asset to ecosystem.
The Dogecoin Foundation's director, Timothy Stebbing, also weighed in on the launch, stating that the team's goal is to introduce utility one layer above the base blockchain, without changing the base layer itself.
