Dogecoin's 200-Day Moving Average Falls Short
Dogecoin's price sits at $0.0929 on October 4th, marking a 0.01% gain over the past 24 hours but a 2.86% loss over the week. This puts it below its all-time high of $0.7316 by 87.3%. The 200-day moving average, which is calculated from 366 daily closing prices and shifts forward by one day with every new session, currently sits at $0.0878, not $0.093 as some market reports suggest.
This discrepancy arises because the calculation method varies among providers: some use hourly data, others closing prices of a single exchange, or exponentially weighted averages that give more weight to recent days. A 200-day moving average is meant to smooth out daily noise and show the average price level, but in this case, it's being pulled down by the high prices from the spring when Dogecoin traded above $0.11.
The reason for the mechanical drop is due to old values falling out of the window as new ones come in. The 200-day moving average was last crossed on September 22nd when the price rose to $0.0998, marking the fifth time this had happened since August 1st.
