Dogecoin's Evolution: Public Testnet for Application Layer Opens
Dogecoin is evolving beyond its role as a peer-to-peer digital currency. The project's team has opened a public testnet for DogeOS, an application layer built on top of Dogecoin.
The testnet allows developers to build and test apps before launching them on the main network. This is a significant step towards turning Dogecoin into an ecosystem with utility beyond just being a store of value.
DogeOS uses zero-knowledge proofs, which are math-based receipts that verify transactions without revealing sensitive information. It's also EVM-compatible, meaning Ethereum smart contracts can run on it as well.
A number of teams are already building apps for DogeOS, including lending protocol Superposition Finance and perpetual exchange Derps. USDoge is a CDP stablecoin, while Snag will bring a prediction market aggregator. PlaysOut plans to release 15 Doge-themed casual games by the end of 2025.
Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing said that introducing utility on top of the base layer is crucial for the project's growth: 'L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me.'
