Dogecoin's Programmable Future Takes Shape with Public Testnet Launch
Dogecoin is expanding its capabilities beyond simple transactions and tipping. The project's team has launched a public testnet for DogeOS, an application layer built on top of Dogecoin that supports Ethereum-style smart contracts.
According to the source, DogeOS is an EVM-compatible ZK-rollup, which means developers who already write Ethereum code can bring their skills and often their existing code over to DogeOS. The testnet uses DOGE to pay for transaction fees, rather than a new token specifically created for the occasion.
Several projects, including Barkswap and Superposition Finance, are building on the testnet, indicating that decentralized finance tools and games are among the types of apps expected to be developed on DogeOS. The team behind DogeOS has emphasized that Dogecoin is moving from a pure payments network toward a programmable ecosystem.
The proposal for native support for zero-knowledge proofs directly on Dogecoin, called OP_CHECKZKP, was submitted in July 2025 and aims to enable trustless interoperability and zk-rollups while keeping the base layer focused primarily on transactions. The involvement of the Dogecoin Foundation signals that this is a core development effort, not a fringe side project.
