Dogecoin's Public Attention Fades as Price Remains Volatile
Dogecoin is often considered one of the most unlikely successes in the cryptocurrency world. It started as satire in 2013, created by two software engineers who used the Bitcoin code with a few tweaks to create a coin featuring a Shiba Inu.
The coin's price has always been closely tied to public attention, which can be fleeting. After Elon Musk tweeted about Dogecoin in 2021, its price skyrocketed, but it crashed when he jokingly called it a 'hustle' on Saturday Night Live.
A Dogecoin ETF exists, but it has limited assets under management and trades very lightly, with daily volumes of only $247,000. In contrast, the leading Bitcoin ETF moves about $2.2 billion in daily trading value, nearly 9,000 times more than DOJE's volume.
The Dogecoin Foundation and community developers are working on several fronts, including Libdogecoin, a toolkit for building Dogecoin payments into other software. However, Dogecoin still lags behind Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana in terms of scarcity, utility, developer activity, institutional interest, and liquidity.
