DogeOS Launches Public Testnet, Bringing App Layer to Dogecoin After 12-Year Wait
The Dogecoin community has been waiting for an app layer for over a decade. The wait is finally over, as DogeOS, a zero-knowledge rollup, has opened its public testnet on September 30th. This move gives developers an EVM-compatible environment to build applications on the Dogecoin chain.
The project settles with Dogecoin (DOGE) and currently secures itself off-chain using a permissioned sequencer, validator set, and trusted execution environment. However, the base-layer simplicity of Dogecoin is a concern for some, as evident from the ongoing discussion about OP_CHECKZKP opcode in the Dogecoin Core repository.
The upgrade would allow native on-chain verification of zero-knowledge proofs, but it remains an open discussion with no maintainer acceptance. Timothy Stebbing, the Dogecoin Foundation director, has endorsed the project, emphasizing that base-layer simplicity should stay intact.
