DOJ Charges Former Robinhood Engineers Over Alleged Crypto Listing Trades
The U.S. Department of Justice charged two former Robinhood engineers, Hefu Chai and Huaisong Xiang, with commodities fraud and wire fraud on September 15, 2026. The allegations state that they misappropriated confidential information about upcoming cryptocurrency listings at Robinhood and used it to trade before the listings were announced publicly.
The defendants allegedly accessed non-public information related to Robinhood's planned cryptocurrency listings and used that information to trade tokens through Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetual futures trading platform. They generated approximately $1.13 million in alleged illicit profits from positions taken before Robinhood listing announcements between 2025 and 2026.
The charges reflect a broader effort by U.S. authorities to apply existing fraud and market integrity rules to digital asset markets. The case centers on whether confidential information was improperly used before Robinhood's announcements reached the public, highlighting how information from centralized crypto businesses can potentially be used through decentralized trading infrastructure.
