Dollar Dominance Gets a Digital Boost
The US government is considering an initiative to promote dollar-backed stablecoins as a tool for reinforcing the dollar's status as the world's reserve asset and generating new demand for US Treasury securities.
This represents a significant shift in US crypto policy, moving from regulation to active promotion of dollar-denominated digital assets.
The plan is built on the GENIUS Act, signed into law by President Trump in July 2025, which established a federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins and requires issuers to maintain reserves backed by US dollars and short-term Treasury securities.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been a vocal proponent of this vision, arguing that stablecoin adoption strengthens dollar dominance and framing these digital tokens as a tool that 'locks in dollar supremacy'.
