Domestic Stablecoins May Fuel Demand for Dollar-Backed Tokens

Share

According to Dan Katz, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), domestic stablecoins could inadvertently boost demand for dollar-backed tokens.

Katz made this observation at a speech at the University of Cape Town, where he noted that users can convert between local and dollar stablecoins through decentralized exchanges or peer-to-peer swaps once they operate on the same blockchain infrastructure.

This shift may move foreign exchange activity away from banks and currency dealers, reducing the friction that gives authorities tools to monitor and manage capital flows.
