Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Reactivate Amid Coldcard Hack Fallout

A significant event has taken place in the Bitcoin ecosystem, as an old wallet from 2013 has been reactivated. The wallet, which had been inactive for over a decade, moved 500 BTC to a new address on August 3. This transaction is notable not only because of its large value but also due to the growing trend it represents.

The funds in question were worth approximately $500,000 when they last moved in 2013, but their current value is significantly higher at around $31.3 million. This substantial increase is a testament to the long-term potential of Bitcoin investments.

However, this move may have been prompted by security concerns rather than profit motives. The hack of Coldcard, a popular hardware wallet used for storing Bitcoin, has led to thousands of BTC being stolen from wallets generated with it. According to Galaxy Research, cumulative losses amount to approximately $130 million in BTC.

The case of the reactivated wallet is not unique, as data shows that multiple dormant coin movements have taken place within the same time window. On July 31, around 6,388 BTC from wallets inactive for between five and seven years were recorded, while on August 3 approximately 935 BTC with more than a decade of inactivity moved.
