Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Spring to Life, Sparking Surge in Activity
A surge in activity from dormant Bitcoin wallets has seen over $100 million in assets reenter circulation after years of inactivity.
In one notable example, a wallet that had been inactive since May 2011 transferred approximately 20.43 BTC in two transactions on September 29, valued at nearly $1.7 million at the time.
The combined gains from these coins were estimated to be around $1.724 million, with an average acquisition price of just $4 per Bitcoin for the first batch, resulting in a gain of about $872,000, a return of over 2,192,000%.
This is not an isolated incident, as blockchain analytics firm Galaxy Research noted that several wallets had become active during September, including those inactive for four to sixteen years.
