Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Stir as 5,419 BTC Worth $457M Move in September
September saw a significant stir in dormant Bitcoin wallets, with 5,419.45 BTC worth $457.23 million moving to new addresses. This represents a substantial amount of long-idle coins, with wallets created between 2010 and 2017 accounting for the majority of the activity. The youngest address was about nine years and two months old, while the two oldest wallets dated back to March 2, 2010, making them 16 years and seven months old.
The largest sum changed hands across 13 transactions, with wallets created in 2016 leading the pack, moving 1,556.53 BTC. Roughly 57 of the 94 transfers involved coins between 12 and 16 years old, which is a pattern that suggests a deliberate consolidation by a small set of sophisticated holders, including early miners methodically reclaiming old rewards.
The average spend was 57.65 BTC, but the most typical transfer was around 25 BTC, due to a few large spends pulling the average up. September also saw the busiest day in terms of transfers on September 5, with around 24, and the most BTC spent on the following day, with 1,620.39 BTC shifted.
