Dormant Wallet's Mysterious Destruction of $100 Million in Bitcoin

A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet, inactive for nearly 12 years, has sparked mystery after transferring a massive $78,123 in BTC to a major centralized exchange and then permanently destroying it. The transfer occurred on March 3, with the wallet sending its entire balance of 20.00010537 BTC (approximately $100 million) to the exchange.

Three weeks later, the funds were almost entirely returned, minus only 4,500 Satoshi (approximately $3), before being destroyed in May. Chainalysis confirmed that the wallet shared 'common ownership' with four other addresses, all of which received their initial funding on April 14, 2014. The majority of these funds can be traced back to the now-defunct Mt. Gox exchange, suggesting the owner is an early Bitcoin adopter.

Bitcoin educator Bennet analyzed one of the addresses and found that it sent 19.6 BTC in 60 separate transactions between 2022 and 2024 to a custodian, despite the price increasing by over four times during this period. The majority of these transactions were for approximately $10,400 each, indicating the owner may have been using a fixed dollar amount clearing strategy.

Chainalysis expressed difficulty in explaining why the owner would transfer long-dormant assets through an exchange, only to return them and then destroy them, requiring the same private key. Analysts speculate that this could be an intentional reduction of Bitcoin's total supply or for purposes such as privacy, taxation, or testing old wallets.
