Dow Drops Amid Jobs Data Boosting Rate Hike Prospects

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed at just under 53,400 on Friday, down 325 points or 0.6% from the previous day's close. This decline comes after August Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) reported a stronger-than-expected 162K jobs added to the economy, exceeding the forecast of 56K.

This strong labor market data has increased the likelihood of a September rate hike by the Federal Reserve, with Fed funds futures now pricing in a 60.4% probability of a quarter-point hike at the September 16 decision.

The President praised the jobs number and urged the Fed to be 'patriots' and keep rates low, warning that unless they do so, he will consider imposing tariffs on countries with which the US runs a trade deficit, more than 90 of them. However, this threat has been met with skepticism by market analysts, as an embargo would have unintended consequences for the economy.

Next week's key data points to watch include the Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI), which will provide insight into inflation trends and inform the Fed's decision-making process.
