DTCC Launches Tokenization Service on Canton Network in October 2026
The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is launching its tokenization service on October 2026, with the Canton network as one of the two chains it will run on. This service is a significant development in the world of finance, as it will allow for the digital representation of securities on a blockchain. The DTCC is the central settlement institution of the US securities market, and this new service will handle part of the $4.7 quadrillion in securities volume the DTCC moves every year.
US Treasury securities held in DTC custody will be the first to be tokenized, and the service will initially run on both the Canton and LFDT Besu networks, with Stellar expected to follow in 2027. The DTCC has partnered with over 50 institutions, including BlackRock, JPMorgan, and the NYSE, to develop this service. The working group has conducted stress tests ahead of launch, including real transactions on the new pipeline.
The SEC has granted the DTCC a no-action letter, which will expire three years after the service goes live. This means that a successor arrangement will be needed by then. The service is not a new retail product, but rather a rebuilding of the plumbing underneath the existing securities settlement system.
Canton Coin, the network's own token, is used to pay fees and compensate operators, but it remains a security with a relatively thin euro market. The token trades at $0.1266, with a market value of $5.03 billion and a daily turnover of $8.8-10.5 million.
