DTCC Tokenization Service Shows Promise with Successful Live Trades
The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has made significant progress in its tokenization service, which aims to increase balance sheet efficiency. In July, DTCC successfully converted real-world assets into tokens for a series of live production trades across various asset classes involving traditional and crypto-native firms.
The trades included collateral pledging, security lending, U.S. Treasury/repo delivery-versus-payment (DVP) trade, equity DVP trade, and equity token transfer among others. The digital conversions took place on LFDT's Besu, DTCC's private network, and Canton Network, Digital Assets' blockchain for financial institutions.
DTCC President of Clearing & Securities Services, Brian Steele, said that market participants will have the best of both worlds as DTC-tokenized assets maintain investor protections, entitlements, and ownership rights while enabling greater efficiency, programmability, and security.
Digital Asset's Chief Business Development Officer, Kelly Mathieson, noted that the success of the tokenization service could increase balance sheet efficiency by 30-50% when it fully launches in October. She also highlighted the potential for real-world assets to be brought onto the Canton ecosystem, including from outside the U.S.
