A Jonas Brothers tour at age 13 marked the beginning of a health crisis for the author, who rapidly lost 25 pounds, experienced extreme thirst, frequent urination, and severe cramps. A pediatrician’s diagnosis of type 1 diabetes shattered expectations and left the family terrified and unprepared.
For years, the author believed his diagnosis was unpredictable. However, he now understands that 90% of type 1 diabetes cases lack family history, leaving many families unaware of risks. Early detection, possible months or years before symptoms appear, could have spared his family the shock and fear of a sudden diagnosis.
Research shows that up to 40% of young Americans with type 1 diabetes are diagnosed only after developing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening complication. The author co-founded Beyond Type 1 in 2015 to combat misconceptions and provide support, emphasizing that diabetes detection should not wait for a crisis.
Simple blood tests can identify type 1 diabetes through autoantibody detection, while regular blood sugar checks and A1C tests help catch type 2 diabetes early. The author urges families to discuss screening options with doctors, highlighting that early knowledge empowers better preparation and reduces the emotional toll on patients and loved ones.
