Easthampton Bans Crypto ATMs Amid Rising Fraud Concerns
The Easthampton City Council in Massachusetts has unanimously voted to ban cryptocurrency ATMs within the municipality's boundaries. The ordinance, passed to combat rising cryptocurrency fraud, prohibits any person or business from hosting, installing, operating, maintaining, or permitting the installation or operation of a cryptocurrency ATM.
City leaders cited concerns over the emotional and psychological strain that these financial scams place on residents, particularly senior citizens and other vulnerable populations. Easthampton City Councilor James Kwiecinski highlighted the difficulty and anxiety that these scams create for community members.
Local law enforcement officers have also encountered issues stemming from cryptocurrency ATMs, with Detective Eric Alexander stating that officers have routinely intervened to protect potential scam victims. The council's decision has received mixed reactions from community members, with some supporting the ban as a way to deter fraudulent activity and others expressing concerns over the impact on legitimate users of digital currency.
Under the terms of the ordinance, all cryptocurrency ATMs must be removed within 30 days after the effective date. Any person or business that continues to operate or host a cryptocurrency ATM after the deadline will be subject to a fine of $300 per day per device.
