ECB Blocks Binance's EU Crypto Licence Bid Amid Digital Euro Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) intervened to block Binance's attempt to secure a Europe-wide cryptocurrency licence through Greece. According to The Wall Street Journal, ECB President Christine Lagarde opposed the application due to concerns about Binance's potential impact on the digital euro project.
Lagarde was worried that Binance's scale could further entrench dollar-denominated stablecoins in Europe, which would undermine the use of euro-denominated alternatives. The digital euro is a key initiative for the ECB, with Lagarde stating she hopes it will form part of her legacy.
Binance had been preparing to secure a licence under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework through Greece's Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC). However, Greek officials told Binance that Lagarde had intervened against the application, and the company subsequently withdrew its bid.
