ECB Launches Pontes: A Blockchain Bridge Connecting Financial Markets with Central-Bank Settlement
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a platform connecting blockchain-based financial markets with central-bank settlement infrastructure. This move marks a significant shift in the way institutions settle tokenized securities.
Pontes allows banks to settle transactions using central-bank money, eliminating the need for private digital money such as stablecoins. The initial group of participants includes 13 market players and four DLT operators.
The ECB plans to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities through Pontes, with an initial focus on euro-denominated securities issued by euro-area governments and regional authorities.
