ECB Launches Pontes Platform for Wholesale Tokenized Asset Settlement
The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a new platform that enables eligible institutions to settle tokenized assets in central bank money. This marks a significant step towards integrating distributed-ledger technology with the Eurosystem's existing TARGET payment infrastructure.
Pontes connects private blockchain networks with the TARGET system, providing an alternative to stablecoins and commercial-bank deposits for settling tokenized bonds, funds, and other assets. The platform is currently live, although it will be expanded gradually as more participants and functions are added.
The ECB's Appia initiative, which aims to develop a broader European tokenized-finance framework by 2028, complements the Pontes platform. The central bank plans to invest in tokenized securities through Pontes, gaining direct experience with trading, settlement, and portfolio management involving DLT-based assets.
Pontes is designed for wholesale transactions between financial institutions and should not be confused with the ECB's retail digital euro project. While the retail digital euro remains under development, Pontes provides a new route for settling tokenized assets using central bank money.
