ECB Prepares Tokenized Investment Move Using Own Reserves
The European Central Bank (ECB) plans to invest in tokenized securities issued on the blockchain, using a portion of its reserves. The initial focus will be on euro-denominated securities from public and supranational institutions, with no specific investment amount or timing determined yet.
According to CoinDesk, this move aims to test tokenized financial markets through the ECB's own investments, covering the process from purchasing tokenized bonds to payment and portfolio management.
The initial investments will focus on euro-denominated securities issued by euro area governments, regional authorities, public agencies, and supranational organizations in Europe. Tokenization involves representing these assets digitally on the blockchain, with no plans to purchase Bitcoin or altcoins.
Payments for the planned purchases will be settled through the Eurosystem's Pontes platform, which connects blockchain-based market platforms with central bank payment infrastructure. The ECB aims to gain experience as an investor in the market it provides infrastructure for, rather than simply offering a payment option through Pontes.
Piero Cipollone, ECB Executive Board Member, noted that Pontes brings stability and trust from central bank money to Europe's tokenized financial ecosystem, contributing to its growth. The ECB plans to add new services to Pontes and extend its operating hours over time, with full implementation envisioned by 2028.
