EigenLayer's Restaking Platform Revolutionizes Decentralized Validation
The Ethereum network has over 30 million ETH staked by validators who risk losing their deposit if they behave maliciously, providing a pool of economic security to the network.
However, this security sits idle with respect to other protocols, which face a bootstrapping problem in attracting validators and stakers. To address this issue, restaking has been proposed as an alternative model where new protocols borrow security from Ethereum instead of building their own.
EigenLayer is one such platform that formalized the concept of restaking and built the infrastructure for it. The platform allows users to commit their staked ETH or liquid staking tokens to EigenLayer, which then delegates them to operators who validate services on behalf of the users.
The platform has expanded to accept any ERC-20 token as a restakable asset, broadening its potential collateral base beyond ETH and its liquid staking derivatives. The major liquid restaking protocols include Ether.fi, Renzo, Puffer, and Kelp, which create tradable tokens representing restaked positions.
