El Salvador Abandons Bitcoin for Stablecoins Backed by Dollars
Five years after making Bitcoin a legal currency to revolutionize money circulation in El Salvador's economy, the country is turning to another cryptocurrency technology for that task: stablecoins backed by dollars.
The move follows an experiment with Bitcoin that was deemed unsuccessful. Stablecoins are designed to maintain a stable value relative to a specific asset, such as the US dollar, unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin which can be highly volatile.
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele is backing this shift towards stablecoins. The country hopes that by using stablecoins, it can improve financial inclusion and make transactions more efficient.
