El Salvador's Bitcoin Accumulation Comes from Private Donations, IMF Confirms
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that El Salvador's Bitcoin accumulation since June 27, 2025, came from private donations rather than public resources. According to the IMF, El Salvador provided documentation showing that the country used no public funds for its Bitcoin purchases.
The IMF statement also mentioned that El Salvador could access approximately $140 million after Executive Board approval and completing prior actions. The additional funding is part of the combined second and third reviews of the country's Extended Fund Facility.
El Salvador has made significant changes to its Chivo wallet, with majority ownership and operational control transferred to a private operator. The government retained custodial responsibilities for customer assets and a minority stake in the company.
