El Salvador's BTC Treasury Hits $600M Valuation Amid IMF Compliance Tensions

El Salvador's treasury currently holds 7,762.37 BTC, valued at $602.84 million as of early September 2026, according to the Bitcoin Office.

The government has accumulated this amount through a daily purchase strategy that began in 2022, with an average acquisition price of $45,200 per coin.

This accumulation creates tension with the IMF agreement, which prohibits voluntary public-sector bitcoin accumulation and requires stable bitcoin holdings in government wallets within a 40-month period to avoid government liability.

The Bitcoin Office maintains an official treasury tracker that allows for direct observation of the balance, making El Salvador one of the few countries with a state-controlled bitcoin reserve that the public can monitor through a live online tool.
