El Zonte's Bitcoin Payments Disappear Amid Volatility and HODL Mentality

El Zonte, a coastal village in El Salvador known as 'Bitcoin Beach', has seen a decline in Bitcoin payments. When Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core developer, attempted to pay with Bitcoin at a local restaurant, the staff member responded with a quote from an English phrase: 'this month's first Bitcoin payment.'

Local merchants report that most customers now use credit cards or cash instead of Bitcoin, a stark reversal from the early days of the Bitcoin Beach experiment. Some staff have even forgotten how to use Bitcoin apps.

The decline in Bitcoin payments is attributed to structural economic issues and a 'HODL' mentality among Bitcoin holders. Merchants face risks due to Bitcoin's volatility, making it less attractive for everyday transactions. The infrastructure for Bitcoin payments remains inconsistent, and user education has not kept pace.
