ERCOT Batch Zero: A New Scoreboard in the AI Power Arms Race
The Texas interconnection process has become a key battleground in the cryptocurrency mining industry's AI power arms race. ERCOT Batch Zero, which began in June, has seen companies disclose their standings in the process as a way to demonstrate competitive strength.
Companies such as IREN, Hut 8, and Soluna have highlighted their conditional Base Load status for various projects, including the Sweetwater hub, Beacon Point, and Kati campus. This classification is significant because it indicates that the capacity has been preserved based on earlier studies, rather than awaiting allocation.
However, as in the hashrate race, the largest number does not tell the whole story. Companies may have different levels of certainty behind their announcements, and individual projects within a company can be at varying stages.
The distinction between Base Load and Studied Load is crucial. Base Load projects enter the study's starting model without undergoing new capacity allocation, while Studied Load projects qualify for inclusion but still face evaluation and allocation. CleanSpark's disclosure of 585 MW as Base Load and 300 MW as Studed Load is a notable example of this distinction.
The companies' disclosures do not consistently identify which conditions apply to each site, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
