Erebor Bank Suffers Losses as Traders Exploit Free Stablecoin Offer
Erebor Bank, backed by Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey and valued at $8 billion, had a promising start in crypto banking. The bank allowed customers to convert USDC and USDT into dollars without charging a fee, making it attractive to crypto firms.
However, professional trading firms including Wintermute and Galaxy Digital exploited this offer by buying USDT below its face value, sending it to Erebor for redemption at $1 per token, and pocketing the difference. The bank lost millions due to these trades.
Erebor eventually restricted free conversions to customers with sizable deposits and introduced volume-based fees and limits to mitigate losses.
The incident serves as a lesson in the complexities of crypto banking, where even small discrepancies can become lucrative opportunities for traders.
