ETF Surge Signals Potential Crypto Recovery

Mizuho analyst Dan Dolev believes that the crypto market may be approaching a sustained recovery, driven by healthier buying pressure. One key indicator of this is the recent surge in demand for spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Dolev points out that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $1.9 billion in net inflows last week, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust leading the way. This comes after five consecutive sessions of inflows, resulting in a total of $1.92 billion through August 21.

The analyst also notes that the current rebound may be driven more by spot and ETF demand than by leveraged long positions. Coin-denominated open interest has fallen to a one-month low following the initial rally and has failed to rebuild meaningfully, suggesting a shift away from leveraged trading.

Dolev sees room for retail investors to return to the market, citing depressed crypto exchange volumes. However, it remains to be seen whether ETF-led accumulation will pull retail traders back onto exchanges or if ETFs will increasingly capture that demand themselves.
