Ethena’s 204% Surge: Will It Hit $2 by 2028?
Over the past 90 days, Ethena (ENA) has surged by 204%, making it one of the top-performing cryptocurrencies globally. It has outperformed other notable cryptocurrencies like Venice (VVV +5.20%), Zcash (ZEC -0.20%), and Hyperliquid (HYPE +3.18%). Ethena is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on Ethereum (ETH), offering new yield-earning opportunities. The recent shift in regulatory attitudes from the SEC and CFTC toward a pro-crypto environment has further boosted the potential of DeFi coins like Ethena.
The Ethena protocol enables the creation of USDe, a synthetic U.S. dollar that maintains a stable price of $1, similar to traditional stablecoins. However, USDe is created using financial derivatives and advanced hedging techniques, allowing for higher yields compared to traditional stablecoins like USDC. The protocol's unique approach has attracted significant attention, with USDe's market cap reaching nearly $5 billion, ranking it among the top 25 cryptocurrencies.
Despite its impressive performance, Ethena carries substantial risks. The synthetic dollar peg can be vulnerable during extreme market movements, and a loss of the dollar peg could lead to a collapse, similar to the Terra Luna ecosystem's failure in 2022. Therefore, Ethena is not suitable for risk-averse investors.
Looking ahead, Standard Chartered predicts that Ethena could outperform Bitcoin and Ethereum by 2027. The bank anticipates ENA could trade as high as $1.10 by the end of 2027 and potentially reach $2 by the end of 2028. Currently priced at $0.26, a rise to $2 would represent a significant gain for investors.
