ether.fi Ditches Restaking from weETH, Citing Low Yields and Risk
ether.fi, a leading Ethereum staking provider, has made significant changes to its liquid staking token weETH. The company has removed restaking from weETH and is dissolving its technical ties with EigenLayer by the end of the year.
This change means that weETH now only earns rewards from the Ethereum network itself, without any additional premium or risk associated with restaking. According to ether.fi's documentation, less than one percent of protocol funds were still in restaking as of August 2026, and this remainder was scheduled to disappear by September 30.
The decision to remove restaking from weETH was reportedly due to the low yields and additional risk associated with it. In a CoinDesk report, ether.fi's CEO Mike Silagadze stated that there had been no yield worth mentioning in restaking, and stakers perceived a certain risk, making an exit seem sensible.
weETH holders can now choose whether or not to participate in restaking through a separate token called weETHs on Symbiotic. This change is intended to provide greater clarity and control for investors.
