Ether.fi to Launch Stablecoin on Ethena’s Whitelabel Platform
Ether.fi is preparing to launch its own branded stablecoin using Ethena’s Whitelabel Stablecoin-as-a-Service platform. This move aligns with a broader trend in the crypto space, where protocols prefer issuing their own stablecoins rather than relying on existing ones. Ethena’s infrastructure handles the technical aspects, including issuance, backing management, custody, reserves, and liquidity integrations, while Ether.fi reaps the benefits of brand recognition and user engagement.
The details of the stablecoin, such as its name, launch timeline, and backing mix, remain undisclosed. However, Ethena’s platform offers two backing options: USDe, a synthetic dollar with a current supply of approximately $4.9 billion, and USDtb, a stablecoin compliant with GENIUS standards and backed by traditional assets like US dollars. The revenue generated by the stablecoin will be shared between Ether.fi and Ethena, though the exact split has not been revealed.
This isn’t the first collaboration between the two protocols. In September 2024, they partnered to allow users to deposit USDe on Ether.fi in exchange for liquid restaking tokens. The new venture expands this relationship by leveraging Ethena’s infrastructure to support a stablecoin branded under Ether.fi’s name. This strategic move is part of Ether.fi’s broader shift from liquid staking to offering neobank-style financial services.
The launch of Ether.fi’s stablecoin could have significant implications for both protocols and the broader stablecoin market. For Ether.fi, it represents an opportunity to consolidate value within its ecosystem, integrating staking, DeFi, and consumer financial services. For Ethena, each new whitelabel client increases the reach of its backing assets, potentially boosting demand for its core products. The key details to watch include the stablecoin’s name, backing composition, launch date, and revenue-sharing arrangement.
