Ether liquidity weakens despite price surge in third quarter

The third quarter of 2023 saw a notable divergence between price performance and market liquidity for major cryptocurrencies. Ether (ETH) outperformed bitcoin (BTC) in price gains, rising 70% compared to BTC's 42%, yet its liquidity weakened significantly. Data from CoinGecko reveals that Ether's median daily market depth from July 6 to September 30 fell to just 35%-45% of Bitcoin's, a sharp decline from at least 60% in the same period last year.

Market depth, a key measure of liquidity, reflects the dollar value of buy and sell orders near the current market price. Despite Ether's price surge, its order books remained relatively thin, with only $13 million to $14 million in depth within 0.15% of its market price. This indicates that large trades could move the market more quickly due to limited order book depth.

In contrast, XRP's liquidity held steady, with a total order book depth of around $30 million. Notably, buy-side interest was stronger, with bids totaling close to $18 million against about $14 million in asks. This suggests firmer demand for XRP despite its lower overall liquidity compared to other major tokens.

The data challenges the assumption that rising prices naturally deepen order books. Ether's price appreciation did not translate into stronger liquidity conditions, though the token remains relatively easy to trade. Solana's SOL also saw contracted liquidity, with overall depth shrinking considerably since 2023. These trends highlight the complex dynamics of crypto market structure, where liquidity can vary significantly even among top-performing tokens.
