Ethereum Aims for Quantum-Safe Mainnet by 2029 as Hegotá Upgrade Takes Form
The Ethereum Foundation has published a tier list evaluating 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. The upgrade aims to strengthen censorship resistance and improve security by allowing validators to force inclusion of valid public-mempool transactions.
Two proposals, FOCIL (Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, EIP-7805) on the consensus layer and Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) on the execution layer, have been labeled as S-tier or 'must-ship' by the protocol. These proposals are designed to strengthen censorship resistance and improve security.
The Hegotá list also includes A-tier proposals that will be committed alongside the headliners unless delivery reality forces a cut. The EF Protocol has set a December 2029 target for quantum resistance across all three layers, execution, consensus, and data. This timeline aligns with independent migration targets from Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
The protocol has also published a post summarizing its current and emerging priorities, stating that shipping post-quantum readiness early is the secure thing to do, and the strategically responsible thing to do. It is the clearest signal they can send that Ethereum intends to exist 50, 100, and 1,000 years from now.
