Ethereum Aims for Quantum-Safe Network by 2029 With Hegotá Upgrade
Ethereum's development team is working towards making the network quantum-resistant by December 2029. This goal aligns with migration targets from major tech companies such as Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft. To achieve this, the Protocol cluster is currently assessing proposals for Hegotá, a unified review of 62 EIPs that aim to enhance post-quantum security.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, around 60 researchers and engineers contributed to the assessment, producing 397 grades before collectively discussing contested items. The central goal is to achieve quantum resistance across execution, consensus, and data by the target date.
The current roadmap outlines a multi-fork path with Glamsterdam expected in December 2026, while full post-quantum readiness sits at L, five forks later. Achieving this milestone requires an average cadence of 7.2 months, or a fallback path at J could deliver minimum viable post-quantum protection with a 12-month cadence.
Hegotá itself is not the quantum-resistant fork but determines whether subsequent work can arrive on schedule. Two proposals lead the list: FOCIL and Frame Transactions, which advance transaction inclusion by giving validators more control over builders and account abstraction respectively.
